If humans discovered the key to cold fusion and artificial intelligence tomorrow, Almost the entire population would never have to do any work ever again. Would society collapse? Would there be riots in the street, or would people be happy with no work to do? (you probably wouldn't have to go to school either...). Let's also assume the robots don't enslave us =P
BEGIN THE WILD SPECULATION!

First a large celebration followed by riots from the workers which would be put down by the new Microsoft Skynet tm powered robots until society died out due to shear laziness, or is kill off by our robot creations in response we will block out the sun leading the robots to use humans as a power source. or by the year 2199 The Matrix will become reality or rather a non-reality.

My first thought on this is something akin to what happened in Wall-E.
I would INSANE with no work to do!!! And i would never let a robot make fursuits... so my job would be safe?

That depends on if your customers would rather buy their fursuit for 1/5 the price. I think there would be a lot of unrest in the population for a while, but most of our minds would turn to science and other academic quests and we would become a advanced race very quickly. I'm talking worm-hole traveling, star-exploring, light-speed traveling kind of advanced. :D ...by the year 2199 The Matrix will become reality What did I tell you about robots not enslaving us? Some people just can't follow instructions lol, jk

lol well, considering 1/5 of the price wont cover material costs, thats not an option unless things start costing what they did in the 1960s. And furries are very picky about their fursuits ^^~

And furries are very picky about their fursuits ^^~ The cost of all manufactured materials like fake fur would fall dramatically due to the nearly-free labor, and the AI would make the suite just as well as a human... even better maybe. For that matter, the cost of raw materials would fall steeply too since a lot of their cost comes from transporting them.

*chuckles* RT, making a fursuit requires emotion, trial and error, and conscious thought. Someone living would have to at the very least make a template. Artificial Intellegence only goes so far...
Also, to convert everything to robots would cost the US a FORTUNE, and we already are in a recession... and somehow, prices are going to drop? no jobs, no money, even bigger deficit. I dont see how that could work.

I can see I've hit a nerve here, so I'll shift focus to another point. Also, to convert everything to robots would cost the US a FORTUNE. We would just have to build a few robots to build more robots. It's not exactly rocket science that the number of robots would increase exponentially, and at only a small initial cost to the manufacturer (plus a little raw material cost).

if things did end up like wall-e *i wouldn't wish that on anyone* i would be the only one in shape, cuz i'd get off my lazy ass and do something. plus, if i don't work, i don't get paid. no school would be good.

but you could'nt work, because robots would have your job. But since there are no jobs and we have no money, then the products the robots make wouldn't sell. its not as much a good idea as it seems at first.

so the economy crashes, we go into the second great depression, then the world goes into world war three, and jesus comes back to earth....

But money is just a concept that makes your work have tangible value. If there truly was no work for humans to do, then they wouldn't need money either. We would be like animals on a farm or something. Cared for by our robot companions.

(do you know how many people who say their jesus are dismissed as potheads? Hell, we've prolly killed him about 20 times at least)
