During the episode where they explained that when Ken was young he wished that his older brother Sam would disappear, but then his brother died by being hit by a car, I am wondering if they had to change around what happened to stop a TV-14 (or a Japanese equivalent) rating for that episode.
Every sign when they talk about it (his parents saying that Sam acted strange when he turned into a teenager too, and them asking if they may have pushed him too far being examples) leads me to think that Sam was originally intended to commit suicide. It is also that they never actually showed the car hitting him or talked about how the car hit him or what happened.
Suicide is more common in Japan than in America, so it would make sense, especially since an unhealthy amount of attention went to Sam, and people in that culture are already intensely stressed to succeed. I have only seen the English dub, but to my knowledge, even in the Japanese version, he still technically died by being hit by a car. But it really seems to me that it was originally written to be a suicide but had to be changed to keep it a kids show rating.
Any thoughts about my theory?

Hmmm...you may be on to something. This is a good theory. It never DOES explain how he got hit by that car. He was a genius, so i figure he could look both ways before crossing the street. Let me research this.

Yes that's what he's getting at. Still looking into this.
